Five Major Manicure Mistakes According to Deborah Lippmann

Getting a salon-quality manicure at home is any girl's dream. Unfortunately, it's much easier said than done. Even so, there are ways that you can make your at-home manicure a whole lot better.

Below, celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippman shares a few mistakes that she sees frequently by women when they try to make their nails look good.

1.Soaking Nails in Water

Apparently, this common practice is actually counterintuitive. The reason? Soaking your fingers in a bowl of water makes them expand. As a result, they're still expanded once you start polishing your nails. They're prone to chips on the sides once they shrink back.


You don't need to go back and forth when filing your nails, or else they'll weaken and peel off. Instead, what you should do is just file in a single direction on the sides and only do shaping at the tip.

3.Exerting Too Much Pressure

Are you more heavy-handed as you get to the tip when buffing your nails? If you have, then you're doing your nails wrong. You need to exert a lot less effort when buffing. Buff from the base to the tip while lightening your touch the closer you are to the tip of the nail.

4.Not Using Cuticle Remover

If you often get hangnails, there's a good chance that you don't spend nearly enough time getting rid of the dead skin on your nail plate. Prevent this from happening by using cuticle remover every time you clean your nails. .

5.Not Waiting in Between Coats

Just like paint, your nail polish needs time to dry, specifically, at least two minutes for each coat. If you're too hasty, each coat will not end up drying properly and the nail polish will bubble.
